Just For Fun…A look back at the 1920′s

As you can imagine I absolutely love the 1920s!  Just for fun I wanted to take a look back at the 1920′s!

I know it is difficult to conceive a world without all the latest hand held electronics but once upon a time children actually kept themselves occupied with:

  • creating make believe play with dolls
  • marbles
  • tag
  • baseball
  • handball
  • kick the can
  • hopscotch
  • sang songs and rhymes
  • listened to the radio
  • Cops and Robbers
  • Cowboys and Indian

During the 1920′s:

  • The oh so silly, Charlie Chaplin, was one of the most popular film actors.
  • This little tid bit made me smile.  The peanut butter and jelly sandwich was created in the 1920′s!  Delish!
  • Reeses Peanut Butter Chocolate Bars & Kool Aid was created.
  • Red Lipstick made it’s first appearance and would be applied to create a cupid bow style.
  • The hair dryer was invented. Can  you imagine before it’s arrival women would connect a long hose to a  vacuum exhaust pipe!
  • Pooh Bear was born!
  • The model T car arrived!
  • Band Aids were invented.
  • Swing dancing and dances like the Charleston were ”all the rage”.

AND I saved the best for last…MICKEY MOUSE was created and became the most beloved animated character of all time!

For a laugh read some slang words of the 1920′s and their meanings.  Too cute!

  • Bearcat – a hot-blooded or fiery girl
  • Bee’s Knees -      An extraordinary person, thing, idea; the ultimate
  • Drugstore Cowboy - a guy that hangs around on a street corner trying to pick up girls
  • Fire extinguisher – a chaperone
  • GiGlad rags“going out on the town” clothes
  • Giggle Water – An intoxicating beverage; alcohol
  • “Now you’re on the trolley!” – Now you’ve got it, now you’re right!
  • Handcuff - an engagement ring

Sun Protection…Wear It….Apply It…Eat It!!!

We all know about the importance of wearing sun protective lotions.  Many of us know there are actually fabrics we can wear to further protect us from the sun’s sometimes harmful rays.  But how many of you know about the foods you can eat to further protect you from sun damage?

There are many special gifts that nature provides to naturally protect us.  One in particular helps protect us from sun damage and is found in some of our most favorite foods.  Lycopene!  Lycopene is natural pigment and cartenoid found in certain foods that gives food their color and in our bodies works as a potent antioxidant protecting our cells from free radical damage. This power pigment is found in tomatoes, watermellon, salmon, grapefruit, apricot and even egg yolks!

Add lycopene into your diet daily with some scrambled eggs & salsa or a baked potato topped with some fresh salsa, drink tomato & vegetable juice or make yourself a delicious caprese salad.  Let’s not forget pizza and spaghetti sauces too.  AND  what is better than watermellon on a warm Summer day…oh so refreshing at the beach!

Brightly colored fruits and vegetables containing carotenoids are more powerful antioxidant rich foods that assist in protecting us from a sun burn and give our immune systems a boost.  These note worthy fruits and veggies are: melons, apricots, carrots, red peppers, squash and sweet potatoes .

Foods rich in Omega 3 fatty acids such as salmon, flax seed, & walnuts also have incredible anti- inflammatory powers that help to reduce inflammation caused from sun exposure that can damage our once healthy cells.

And lastly, my most favorite, Dark Chocolate!  Due to the flavanoids, which are antioxidants found in dark chocolate, it is now believed consuming dark chocolate may improve the skin’s ability protect itself against some types of skin damage including sun burns.  Now you can justify eating that chocolate bar on the way to the beach!

Be sure to load up on on these super foods daily for added sun protection.

So excited to read this and fill you all in! Bringing Up Bebe: One American Mother Discovers the Wisdom of French Parenting

Good Morning.  :)

While sitting in the eye doctor’s waiting room this am I flipped through People magazine and read a review on Bringing Up Bebe: One American Mother Discovers the Wisdom of French Parenting.  I am completely intrigued!!!  I really don’t have much free time to relax and read a book but I am going to do my best to read this one and report back.  I came home and ordered it online.  I will keep you posted.  Please let me know your feedback if you have already read this or now end up reading it.  I think it’s going to be a beneficial read!

Bringing Up Bebe: One American Mother Discovers the Wisdom of French Parenting

The secret behind France’s astonishingly well-behaved children.

When American journalist Pamela Druckerman has a baby in Paris, she doesn’t aspire to become a “French parent.” French parenting isn’t a known thing, like French fashion or French cheese. Even French parents themselves insist they aren’t doing anything special.

Yet, the French children Druckerman knows sleep through the night at two or three months old while those of her American friends take a year or more. French kids eat well-rounded meals that are more likely to include braised leeks than chicken nuggets. And while her American friends spend their visits resolving spats between their kids, her French friends sip coffee while the kids play.

Motherhood itself is a whole different experience in France. There’s no role model, as there is in America, for the harried new mom with no life of her own. French mothers assume that even good parents aren’t at the constant service of their children and that there’s no need to feel guilty about this. They have an easy, calm authority with their kids that Druckerman can only envy.

Of course, French parenting wouldn’t be worth talking about if it produced robotic, joyless children. In fact, French kids are just as boisterous, curious, and creative as Americans. They’re just far better behaved and more in command of themselves. While some American toddlers are getting Mandarin tutors and preliteracy training, French kids are- by design-toddling around and discovering the world at their own pace.

With a notebook stashed in her diaper bag, Druckerman-a former reporter for The Wall Street Journal-sets out to learn the secrets to raising a society of good little sleepers, gourmet eaters, and reasonably relaxed parents. She discovers that French parents are extremely strict about some things and strikingly permissive about others. And she realizes that to be a different kind of parent, you don’t just need a different parenting philosophy. You need a very different view of what a child actually is.

While finding her own firm non, Druckerman discovers that children-including her own-are capable of feats she’d never imagined.  http://www.pameladruckerman.com/

Safe and Effective Sun Protection For Your Beautiful Little Ones

With so many SPF products on the market it is difficult to know which one to choose.  As a parent we want what is best for our children always but as a consumer we are bombarded with so many choices and marketing that in our busy lives we can be misled buy what jumps out at us on a convenient store shelf.

It is best to keep some key things in mind.  Here is a little helpful information for you.

There is chemical and physical sun protection ingredients.  A chemical sun protection ingredient is absorbed into the blood stream whereas a natural sun protection ingredient rests on the skin.

A natural, physical block, is the safest option.  When purchasing a sun protective product turn the bottle over and look under Active Ingredients.  You are looking to see either Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide.  These should be the only ingredients listed in this section.  Any other ingredients listed here would be chemical sunscreens, not a physical block.

From our trusted friends at Episencial…The difference is a chemical sunscreen ingredient is absorbed into the skin to deal with the sun’s rays in a chemically reactive process in the skin cell itself, with potentially unintended and harmful consequences to the skin and body.  However, a physical block such as the minerals zinc or titanium, sit on the skin’s surface and reflect sunrays out away from the body like tin foil.  They are not absorbed into the skin making them a healthier and effective choice.  Physical blocks provide both UVA and UVB protection, and they are non-irritating as well as non-allergenic.

For effective and safe sun protection for your little bellas and fellas I recommend Episencial’s Sunny Sunscreen!  http://shop.episencial.com/sunny-sunscreen-baby-lotion-spf-35.html  This natural mineral, broad spectrum, lightweight, non-greasy moisturizer is water resistant for up to 80 minutes! Free From the Bad Stuff™: No Additives, Parabens, Phenoxyethanol, Harsh Preservatives, EDTA, SLS, Synthetic Fragrances, Gluten, or Nut Oils.  I love it and am loving all their other products too!  I will admit to sneaking the products out of  my daughter’s bathroom and using them.  I am especially fond of The Playful Wash and the Better Body Butter!

Stick with me!  I’ll do the research for you!  Now your bathing beauties can enjoy some fun in the sun without Mommy and Daddy worrying!  Pssst…you can use it too!
